Longline Heating

 

Heating long pipelines for freeze protection, viscosity control, or temperature maintenance presents special requirements for electrical heat-tracing. These applications often require significant electrical loads, often with a single electrical power point. Tyco Thermal Controls provides a wide range of industry-proven solutions for these applications. Extreme long lines are usually transfer lines between processing plants or to storage or transportation facilities. Tank farms, piers for ocean transport vessels, and pipes between petrochemical facilities are all examples of applications for which long line heat tracing may be used. Even if a processing plant uses steam for in-plant heat tracing, electrical tracing may be beneficial for the transfer lines.

Long line tracing systems can be complex to design and install. For this reason Tyco Thermal Controls offers various technologies to choose from, thus providing the best cost optimization for your project.

Parallel heating systems (self-regulating, power-limiting or constant wattage zone technology) typically offer a maximum circuit length of about 250m. The cost of additional power circuits can be quite significant. Long pipes lines very often have less valves and flanges and a quite uniform heat loss. A single long circuit can then be controlled based on the reading of one representative temperature sensor, and other heating technologies can offer substantial economical advantages.

Depending on length and temperature ranges, various alternative technologies can be offered, which often employ 3-phase circuits:
  • PI (polymer insulated) heating systems are especially suitable for longer heating circuits (i.e. >250 m) and can be used for temperatures up to 300°C. Similar parallel heating cables, PI systems can be terminated in the field.

  • MI (mineral insulated) heating systems are especially suitable where higher temperatures (>250°C) or high power outputs are required. For longer heating circuits, various sheath materials are offered for temperatures even up to 600°C. MI systems can't be easily terminated in the field, connections must be prepared in a shop or preferably factory assembled.

  • STS (skin-effect tracing) heating systems are custom engineered for each application and are typically used for lengths between 1 and 25 km from a single power source.

Long line heat-tracing systems should be designed with engineering support from Tyco Thermal Controls to select the most appropriate technology and provide a fully reliable system for a long service life.
