Health Care Facilities
Health Care Facilities Emergency evacuation of health care facilities and other institutional buildings is no easy task. Special care must be taken when the mobility of occupants is restricted. Accordingly, building codes require that fire protection and fire alarm systems are constructed with certain precautions in mind and that they meet certain, stringent safety standards.

High Rise Buildings
High Rise Buildings The time to evacuate a high-rise building is largely indeterminate due to slow response by occupants and panic and confusion created by smoke and loss of power. Directed/phased evacuation is being implemented increasingly by Fire Departments in higher occupancy buildings, where the evacuation is controlled and coordinated with firefighting efforts so as to prevent people from entering high risk areas. For this reason, it is more important than ever before that the emergency circuits and fire alarm system notification circuits maintain integrity throughout the fire. Tyco Thermal Controls offers a complete range of fire-rated cable to meet these requirements.

Airports
Airports Airports present unique safety challenges as aviation fuel is pumped from storage facilities to planes in close proximity to high volumes of passengers and personnel. Safety systems take priority in the design of airports, as real life airport fires have all-too-vividly demonstrated the severity of panic and confusion that can be created by smoke and loss of power.

Historic Buildings
Historic Buildings Protection from fire is a prime concern in historic or "heritage" buildings, yet modernization and upgrading of facilities often does not allow for extensive building alteration. Mineral insulated cable offers unique solutions including a fire survival cable that powers emergency circuits before, during and after a fire and yet still can fit into very tight and convoluted runs. The compact construction of Pyrotenax MI cable and Raychem MC cable, combined with good flexibility and the ability to be molded into small spaces, makes these cables ideal for retrofitting fire pumps and power feeders while minimizing any aesthetic impact on the building. Where conduit and wire is preferred, use Raychem RHW, the 2- hour fire-rated power cable solution. Raychem CI or Raychem CiC, both 2-hour fire-rated polymer insulated cables, can be used when creating fire-rated circuits for the fire alarm system.

Military and Scientific
Military and Scientific Both the military and the scientific communities have unique wiring needs. The military often requires cable that can be hermetically sealed off, is radiation resistant, and is equipped with explosion-proof fittings. Scientific applications include the need for cables which can carry large amounts of current and can withstand high temperatures. Tyco Thermal Controls offers mineral insulated and polymer insulated cables for these specific types of applications.

Mines and Manufacturing
Mines and Manufacturing The presence of gases or fumes in hazardous environments requires a system to block the passage of explosive vapors. Accordingly, the compressed MgO insulation in Pyrotenax® wiring cables stops the passage of helium gas at 2000 psi. Factory fabricated Pyrotenax MI wiring units do not require gas path seals, have a smaller profile than wire and conduit methods, and provide a cost-effective alternative to satisfying NEC Article 501-5 requirements.

Petrochemical
Petrochemical The ravages of small fires can rapidly escalate into catastrophic proportions when a refinery shutdown system does not function properly. Conventional wiring methods can fail in less than 3 minutes at 425°F (250°C), which is well below the temperature of hydrocarbon flash fires (2012°F / 1100°C). In the event of a fire, Pyrotenax® mineral insulated wiring cable can withstand temperatures up to 2200°F (1204°C) to ensure the integrity of all power and control wiring to motor-operated valves and emergency equipment.

Power Generation
Power Generation Continuous exposure to high temperatures can accelerate the aging characteristics of conventional wiring systems over time, often resulting in brittle insulation and premature failure of the wiring system. Pyrotenax® mineral insulated wiring cables provide the solution, as they are constructed with inorganic, inert materials which provide for greater system integrity.

Pulp and Paper
Pulp and Paper The presence of corrosive environments during routine operation or in an upset condition requires additional measures of equipment protection. Independent laboratory reports demonstrate that Pyrotenax® Alloy 825 provides superior corrosion resistance from most of the common stainless steels and resists stress corrosion cracking in both chloride or alkaline environments.

Tunnels and Subways
Tunnels and Subways The possibility of accidents and fire in subways and tunnels is a very real and constant threat. Codes spell out minimum requirements, are not always stringent, and generally improve only after tragedies occur. In these high risk environments, good engineering practices combined with the use of quality brand wiring systems, such as Raychem or Pyrotenax, will help ensure that the highest level of safety practices are being applied.
