The Risk
The Cabinet War Rooms are situated in the basement of the Treasury building in Parliament Square, London. From here Winston Churchill directed the war effort. It is now a museum containing irreplaceable artifacts and exhibits from that time. As part of the recent refurbishment of the Treasury, it was recognised that any undetected water leak could damage or destroy many of the historic contents and therefore a system was required capable of quickly detecting, locating and alerting the facilities manager to water ingress.

The Solution
TraceTek leak detection systems, manufactured by Tyco Thermal Controls, provided the solution with a fast leak detection, monitoring and alarm system. At the heart of the system is TraceTek TT1000 water sensing cable which will detect the presence of water at any point along its length. This is linked to TraceTek Sensor Interface Modules (TTSIM-2) each of which can monitor up to 500 feet (150 m) of sensing cable and, when water is detected, provide an alarm and leak location display. TTSIM can be used as a stand-alone alarm and locating module or be networked with other TraceTek modules connecting directly to a Building Management or Distributed Control System.

Specific Application
For protecting the Cabinet War Rooms Museum over 2.3km of TraceTek TT1000 sensing cable has been installed along with Sensor Interface Modules and Master Modules linked into the building management system via a RS-485 network. Now, if ever a water leak occurs it will be detected quickly and trigger an alert so that remedial action can be taken immediately to protect the exhibits. The leak detection network has been designed to be versatile enough to enable the system to be extended to other areas in planned phased expansions.
